Chair of Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Biotechnology

The Chair of Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Biotechnology was established based on the Chair of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Plant and Microbial Biotechnology. It was founded in 2016 by the corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, Professor Armen Trchunyan. A. Trchunyan made a great contribution to the development of the Chair. During the years of his leadership, the educational laboratories of the chair were equipped with the latest generation appliances, and more than a dozen educational manuals and peer-reviewed articles in journals with a high impact factor were published.

The basic and applied research carried out in the chair includes in vitro and in vivo studies of tumorigenesis mechanisms in eukaryotic organisms, studies of their treatment with new models using chemotherapeutic and plant-based compounds, studies of a new anti-diabetic model, evaluation of metabolic changes related to oxidative stress. Microbial bioenergetics research, the discovery of bioenergy production mechanisms and new ways of their regulation and development of application guarantees, processing of organic waste by physicochemical and biological methods and use as a nutrient medium for microbes in order to obtain an important biotechnological final product are usually carried out in the chair. The chair's researchers isolate microbes from various ecological niches of Armenia, as well as from food, study their diversity and evaluate their biotechnological potential, obtain isolated cultures of endemic, endangered, or rare plant species of Armenia, study their properties and develop ways of application.

The Chair employs internationally recognized and leading specialists who are involved in international and local grant programs and undergo regular training. The professorial staff of the Chair is the author of many educational manuals, monographs, school textbooks, and scientific articles, including those published in periodicals with a high impact factor.

The department implements "Biochemistry and Biotechnology" Undergraduate and "General and Medical Biochemistry", "Applied Microbiology", as well as "Microbiology and Biotechnology" master's educational programs.
