Chair of Human and Animal Physiology
The Chair of Human and Animal Physiology was founded in 1921 with the efforts of the rector of the university, Tigran Musheghyan, after whom it is still called today. In 1922 T. Musheghyan was appointed the head of the Chair of Physiology and headed it until 1935. Then the Chair was headed by Davit Gzgzyan, Grigor Musheghyan, Professor Sargis Hakobyan, Academician of RA NAS Hovhannes Baklavajyan, Professor Nikolai Hakobyan, Professor Siranush Minasyan, Silva Amiryan, Associate Professor Anahit Arakelyan.
One of the most important research directions of the chair was the study of the neurophysiological and neurochemical mechanisms of the regulation of environmental factors (oxygen starvation, vibration, noise) and interbody functions of the organism (cardiovascular, respiratory, blood coagulation systems, metabolism, wrist analyzer) under mental and emotional stress.
Currently, the scientific research carried out in the chair is mainly aimed at the study of the neurophysiological and neurochemical mechanisms of the regulation of the organism's inter-body functions under the conditions of extreme factors (oxygen starvation, vibration, neurodegeneration, mycotoxins, viral infections, etc.) and mental and emotional load, as well as the stability of the organism's ontogenesis and cellular homeostasis in extreme situations, as well as evaluation by physiological, cytological, histological, and immunohistochemical methods.
The department employs leading specialists who undergo regular training and are involved in international and local grant programs. The chair's scientist-pedagogues are the authors of educational manuals, monographs, school textbooks, and scientific articles, which are also published in periodicals with a high impact factor.
The Department of Human and Animal Physiology closely cooperates with the leading medical centers of the country, where practical training in professional subjects, as well as students' professional practice, is often held.
The "Fundamental and Applied Physiology" Master's educational program operates in the Department of Human and Animal Physiology.
