Linguist, Ph.D., professor, and honored figure of RA science
Barseghyan was born on October 25, 1920, in the village of Mastara, Aragatsotn Province, RA. In 1938, after graduating from the local seven-year and secondary schools in Talin, he was admitted to the YSU Linguistic Faculty.
In 1941, he was drafted into the army from the 4th grade and participated in the Great Patriotic War. After being seriously injured for the third time in 1943, Barseghyan was demobilized. In 1944, Barseghyan graduated from the university, and in 1948, he completed his post-graduate studies.
In 1952, Barseghyan defended a candidate's thesis, and in 1981 - a doctoral thesis. In 1955, he became associate professor, and in 1984 – a professor.
From 1946 – 1948, he lectured at YSU Armenian Language Chair, and from 1948 to 1958, he was a lecturer at the Armenian Language Chair of ASPU. In 1958, he moved to YSU and in 1969, was elected head of the Armenian language Chair. In 1977 – 1985, Barseghyan was the dean of the Faculty of Philology, from 1985 - 1990, the founding head of the Chair of the History of the Armenian Language.
From 1969 – 1972, he was the first secretary of the YSU political party committee, from 1955, Barseghyan was the scientific secretary of the terminological committee under the Council of Ministers of the Armenian SSR, and from 1992, the scientific secretary of the Armenian Higher Council of the State Language Inspectorate under the Government of the Republic of Armenia.
He authored dozens of scientific articles, and more than 20 monographs, including "Theory of Verb and Conjugation in Modern Armenian" (Yerevan, 1953), "Manuk Abeghyan's Theory of Five Cases and His Old and New Criticisms" (Yerevan, 1967). , "Theories of differentiation of Armenian parts of speech" (Yerevan, 1975), "Teaching of Armenian parts of speech" (Yerevan, 1980), as well as school textbooks. Starting from 1964, "The Terminological Guide" was regularly published under his editorship, additions, and comments (the last one: Yerevan, 2006).
He is also the author of the "Armenian Orthographic Terminological Dictionary" (Yerevan, 1973), as well as the co-author of the five-volume "Dictionary of place names of Armenia and adjacent regions" (Yerevan, 1986 - 2001), which was published in 2003 and was awarded the RA President's Award.
10 Ph.D. theses were defended under Barseghyan’s supervision.
In 1970, he became an honored figure of science of the ASSR.
He was awarded the "Sign of Honor" (1981), the Medal of the Second Degree of the Great Patriotic War (1985), Movses Khorenatsi, and many other medals.
Barseghyan passed away on August 2, 2014, in Yerevan.
