Ph.D., professor, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR
Mergelyan was on May 19, 1928, in Simferopol. In 1947, he graduated from YSU Physics and Mathematics Faculty, and in 1949 completed his post-graduate studies. In the same year, his candidate’s dissertation was evaluated by the council as a doctorate and he became a Ph.D. In 1951, Mergelyan became a professor. In 1953, he was elected a correspondent member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and in 1956, - an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.
From 1956 – 1960, he was the founding director of the Yerevan Scientific Research Institute of Mathematical Machines. From 1962-1965 and 1971-1979, he managed the joint computing center of the Academy of Sciences of the ASSR and YSU. From 1963 – 1971, Mergelyan was the deputy academic secretary of the Mathematical Department of the USSR Academy of Sciences and the head of the Department of the Theory of Complex Variable Functions of the V. Steklov Mathematical Institute, and from 1971-1974: Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences of the ASSR. From 1972 – 1979, Mergelyan headed the Department of Numerical Analysis of YSU, and from 1979 - 1982 - the Department of Complex Analysis of the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the ASSR. From 1982 – 1986, he was the rector of Kirovakan (now Vanadzor) State Pedagogical Institute.
Mergelyan’s research covers a number of areas of modern analysis. He obtained fundamental results in approximation theory in the complex domain. With the new method he created, he gave an exhaustive answer to the problem of the possibility of uniformly approximating the functions of a complex variable with polynomials.
He has made a great contribution to the establishment and further development of the internationally recognized Armenian mathematical scientific school, as well as to the establishment and development of computer technology and cybernetics in Armenia.
Mergelyan co-authored the monographs "Some Questions of Constructive Theory Functions" (M., 1951), and "Soviet Mathematical School" (M., 1967).
In 1952, he was awarded the USSR State Prize.
From 1959-1963 and 1971-1975, Mergelyan was elected deputy of the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR.
