Avetik Ter-Poghosyan (1880-1954)
Ph.D, Professor, and Honored figure of science of the ASSR
Ter-Poghosyan was born on January 15, 1880, in Vartablur village of Lori. He studied at the local, and then at the Nersisyan schools. He was admitted to the Gevorgyan Seminary, where he graduated in 1901.
From 1903-1908, Ter-Poghosyan studied at the Faculty of Philosophy of Leipzig University, where in 1909, he became Ph.D. After graduating from the university, he returned to his homeland and taught science at Shushi Diocesan, Alexandrapol (now Gyumri) Arghutyan schools, Gevorgyan Seminary, Tbilisi Nersisyan School and Yerevan Teacher's Seminary.
From 1920-1948, he worked at YSU and headed the chair of zoology. In 1929, he became a professor.
From 1936-1939, he was the dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and lectured at Yerevan Medical Institute and Baku Pedagogical Institute. For many years, he worked at the Institutes of Biology and Zoology of the Armenian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and the Yerevan Natural History Museum.
He authored dozens of scientific works dedicated to the study of some groups of the fauna of Armenia, freshwater fauna, agricultural pests, and the history of the development of Armenian biological thought. The monographs "Darwin and his Theory" (Yerevan, 1947), "The Development of Biological Thought in Armenia (from Ancient Times to the 18th Century)" (Yerevan, 1955), and the textbook "General Zoology" (Yerevan, 1939) are worth mentioning.
Ter-Poghosyan was awarded the title of Honored Scientist of the ASSR.
He passed away on May 12, 1954, in Yerevan.
