It is necessary to constantly improve self-development, discover new things and move forward- Anahit Rostomyan
Anahit Rostomyan, student from YSU Faculty of Biology, won the 3rd place prize in "Best Student" competition republican (inter-university) stage in the field of natural sciences with graduate educational program. Her story will make everyone imagine how to apply theoretical knowledge in practice during laboratory research and how to combine study and work.
Anahit is a 2nd year student studying in "Microbiology and Biotechnology" graduate program. In the interview with us, she noted that YSU provides all the opportunities to become a leading specialist, just one should be purposeful and strive for more.
Anahit, were your expectations justified after getting admitted to the university?
Yes, they were justified. I enriched my theoretical knowledge at the faculty, and now I have the opportunity to practically use them. During the years of study at the university, I expanded my mindset and developed a way of thinking that stimulates me to constantly find new things, to establish myself and become a more skilled specialist. The strictness of YSU professors drives the student to find new information through alternative methods and master his/her profession in the best way. Thus, the faculty points out future directions to students.
Along with your studies, you actively participate in various laboratory studies. Will you tell us about it?
I am actively involved in practical studies, during which we regularly conduct scientific experiments and after recording certain results, we publish the obtained results in the form of scientific articles. I am also involved in laboratory studies, and I authored the article titled "The effects of UV, gamma- and X-ray irradiation on the growth, antibacterial activity and radio-protective of Lactobacillus rhamnosus". That article, published in the "Letters in Applied Microbiology" international journal, is about ultraviolet, gamma, X-ray irradiation, how they effect on lactobacillus rhamnosus and how they stimulate or suppress their growth, various biological activities. I grew and irradiated lactobacillus rhamnosus on myself, studied their radioresistance and the mechanisms of their radioresistance.
I should mention that I also had the opportunity to apply the knowledge I received in practice. I worked for more than a year as a chemist-microbiologist at the "Pepsi-Cola Bottler Armenia" factory of "Jermuk International" company. While working here, I organized tours for YSU students, showing them where they can find a job after graduation. And now I devote all my time to my studies and improving my professional skills.
What does winning this competition mean to you?
Winning the competition for providing nominal scholarships to students with the best progress in RA universities obliged me to study better, think about moving forward and achieving new successes. I realize that one can achieve success only due to learning, self-education and constant work. It is necessary to continuously discover new things, learn, delve into and move forward.
What are your plans for the future in biology?
- My main goal is to join the ranks of the best specialists in the field. I am sure that by developing my professional knowledge and skills, I will also contribute to science.
