Armenian studies in authoritative international journals
YSU, being a research institution, promotes the publication of articles in international, high-ranking scientific journals. Remarkable progress has been recorded in this direction at YSU Faculty of Armenian Philology; the teaching staff of the faculty tries to present the field of Armenian studies on international platforms by publishing research articles in high-ranking scientific journals.
Albert Makaryan, Head of the Chair of History of Armenian Literature and Literary Theory after Academician Hr. Tamrazyan, Associate Professor of Philological Sciences and Professor is the author of similar articles, which, in addition to other topics, reflect the comparative examination of Armenian and Russian works of literature, revealing various connections, features and commonalities of literary characters, themes and the totality of events.
A. Makaryan's articles have been published in international Q2, Q4 and other high-ranking scientific journals. The article titled "The Image of Chichikov in the Works of Raphael Patkanyan" (co-authored by chair lecturer Astghik Soghoyan) was published in 2023 in "Vestnik of Saint Petersburg University. Asian and African Studies" journal.
Speaking about the content and importance of the article, the professor noted that Russian authors had a great influence on the formation of Armenian writers’ mindset. Literary directions, methods and schools penetrated Armenian reality through the prism of Russians’ works. "Armenian writers and thinkers were influenced by Russian cultural reforms, they followed all developments, theoretical and methodological innovations and even got to know world art mainly due to Russian studies. From this point of view, the role of N. V. Gogol is invaluable. His works "Dead Souls", "The Government Inspector" and "The Nose" and the world view expressed in them, the way of perception and reflection of reality left a mark on the works of Armenian authors, which was the basis of various literature connections. Gogol's works had a great influence on the thinking of R. Patkanyan (1830-1892). The famous Armenian writer repeatedly mentions Gogol's works and methods in the letters to his relatives and friends. For example, in a letter written to his nephew, Kerovbe Patkanyan, a prominent orientalist of the time, R. Patkanyan emphasizes that it is necessary to write like Gogol, in his style and method, even devaluing his writing style by that comparison."
Emphasizing the complexity of research conducted in the field of Armenian studies, A. Makaryan noted that it is necessary to be informed of the chosen topic in the best possible way.
"In recent years, many professors of the Faculty of Armenian Philology have been working diligently to publish articles in international periodicals. No matter how difficult it is to conduct research in this field, we see the number of published articles is increasing, which is admirable. It should be noted that the publication of any article goes through several stages: from the selection of the topic to the publication," the professor emphasized.
In this context, Makaryan emphasized that in order to carry out research and studies in the field of Armenian studies, an important condition must be met: finding connections between Armenian and foreign literature, as well as eternal themes. The professor advises a specialist who wants to conduct research in the field to start with finding this connection.
