Newly elected president of YSU Student Council on work activities and future plans
Hasmik Apreyan, the newly elected president of the YSU Student Council, is currently in her first year of the "Ethics" master's program at the YSU Faculty of Philosophy and Psychology. We spoke with her about the functions of the YSU Student Council, her vision for new initiatives, and her plans for the future.
Hasmik Apreyan has been involved in the YSU Student Council since her first year of undergraduate studies. After participating in various programs as part of the Council, she was elected as the responsible secretary last academic year and is now serving as the president this year.
- Hasmik, what priorities do you plan to set for the Student Council's activities? What innovations and changes will you implement in the Council's strategy?
- The YSU Student Council is the largest student organization in Armenia, and this year we marked its 30th anniversary with a grand ceremony. This milestone allowed us to recognize the structure's achievements and significant contributions. The main goal of the Student Council is to protect students' rights and interests while promoting their professional development, including informal education. We remain committed to our core values and functions and aim to build on established milestones with renewed energy and unity, creating new programs and initiatives.
Innovation will be a constant part of our efforts. Soon, we will launch a new app that will serve as a communication and awareness platform for students. The app is currently in development and testing, and we look forward to presenting it to the university community in the near future. Our team is dedicated to developing new formats and initiatives, and while I don't want to reveal too many details just yet, there’s much to look forward to.
- As the newly elected president of the Student Council, how do you assess the protection of students' rights and interests at the university? What steps will you take to ensure continued effectiveness in that direction?
- The protection of students' rights is fairly strong when students are informed. While we do have awareness activities—such as emails and videos—aimed at educating students about their rights and responsibilities, there is always room for improvement. To enhance awareness, we will soon produce informative videos on various topics and share them through the Student Council's social media platforms.
- How can students become members of the YSU Student Council? Can you present the membership procedure?
- At the beginning of September, the Student Council implements its "Awareness" program in each faculty. During these sessions, the Council presents its various sectors of activity, programs, and encourages proposals and discussions. Interested students are given the opportunity to fill out applications for membership in the Council. We have committees focused on sports, culture, scientific and educational initiatives, and foreign relations, as well as clubs like the "What, Where, When?" intellectual club and the debate club. Students can join these based on their interests and preferences.
-What projects are you planning to implement in the near future?
Since semester planning starts at an early stage, we plan to implement several well-known university programs: "Self-Management," "Development," and a permanent hackathon. These initiatives have been part of the Student Council's activities for years.
Additionally, the inter-faculty event "Let's Compete" is currently ongoing, featuring sports, intellectual, and cultural tournaments. We are also excited to announce the upcoming "Vision for University" competition, which is a new format organized by the Student Council’s culture commission.
We will continue to pursue our plans with renewed vigour and responsibility. Students can stay informed about upcoming events by following the official page of the Student Council.
Hasmik Apreyan encouraged students to learn, acquire new skills, and make the most of the opportunities and platforms available to them, aiming to become better and more competitive professionals.
We congratulate Hasmik Apreyan on her election as the president of the YSU Student Council and wish her continued success in her new role.
