New change in assessment system to benefit students
At Yerevan State University, starting from the 2nd semester of the 2024/2025 academic year, assessment will be conducted with the preservation of decimal points. Effective assessments of courses will also be based on this principle. This change aims to increase the accuracy of assessments, providing an opportunity for a more precise assessment of students' work and a clearer understanding of their level of ability.
One of the priorities of YSU is the continuous improvement of the educational process by introducing innovative approaches and ensuring equal scientific and academic opportunities for all. According to the recent change, all components of the final educational assessment at YSU, which is based on the 20-point assessment system, will now be evaluated with decimal points maintained. This new assessment method aims to provide a more impartial, accurate, and objective assessment system.
Problems, Approaches and Advantages
Armen Sargsyan, Head of the Educational Process Control Department at YSU Educational Methodology Department, emphasized that this new mechanism will help reduce concerns arising from grade rounding.
"When we use rounding, it creates challenges in comparing and evaluating students’ work. The rounding system often leads to an artificial increase of 1-2 points, complicating the lecturer's work. For instance, if a student completes only half of a task (which would normally be awarded 1 point if completed fully), they receive 0.5 points, which is then rounded up to 1. As a result, this student’s grade ends up the same as that of a student who completed the task in full. In the case of rounding, the accuracy of the student's performance is not clearly reflected," said A. Sargsyan.
With the new approach, when grades are recorded with decimal points, equal competition will be ensured for all students.
New Change in Assessment System to Benefit Students
Thanks to this change, each student will receive a grade that accurately reflects their work, without rounding. This will allow for a clear distinction between unfulfilled, partially completed, and fully completed tasks.
"This is a significant advantage for students, as they will be able to clearly see the difference in their performance. Our goal is to provide quality education and train qualified specialists. I am sure that this change will bring positive results," emphasized A. Sargsyan.
It is also important to note that YSU students and faculty have already been informed of the change and have received the relevant notifications via email.
