ASIIN experts assess YSU educational programs during international accreditation process
Yerevan State University recently concluded a series of meetings and discussions with experts from the German ASIIN Agency. Over the span of three days, the focus was placed on the international accreditation of six bachelor’s and master’s programs from the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics. The expert group assessed the university's resource utilization, offering constructive feedback and recommendations aimed at enhancing future collaboration and program development.

As part of the international accreditation process of six educational programs from the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics ("Actuarial and Financial Mathematics," "Applied Statistics and Data Science," "Mathematics" (bachelor’s programs), "Applied Statistics and Data Science," "Mathematics and Applications," and "Financial Mathematics" (master's programs)), an expert group formed by the German ASIIN Agency visited YSU. The expert group reviewed the educational programs, met with various stakeholders (academic staff, students, and employers) to assess the quality, alignment, and sustainability of the programs, and drew conclusions about their overall quality.

Armen Budaghyan, Director of YSU Quality Assurance Center, discussed the work done so far, noting that in the first phase of the process, the experts conducted a comprehensive assessment and analysis of the six educational programs at YSU.
"The process involved the collection of extensive quantitative and qualitative data to ensure that all decisions and assessments were grounded in concrete, factual information. In this context, YSU Quality Assurance Center coordinated the efforts of the working groups for these six programs, ensuring the alignment of the data with the standards set by the ASIIN Agency. Consequently, a thorough and detailed report was compiled and submitted to the ASIIN Agency," he said.
After reviewing the report, the experts arrived at Yerevan State University to evaluate the situation on-site, familiarize themselves with the technical equipment and laboratory facilities, and meet with various stakeholder groups.
"In the next phase of the accreditation process, the expert group will prepare a written report detailing their impressions, observations, and feedback from the visit. It is important to note that the experts were notably impressed. They expressed satisfaction with all aspects of the meetings, the conditions provided for students, and other related matters," stated Armen Budaghyan. He also mentioned that the process for the international accreditation of 10 additional educational programs—six from the Faculty of Economics and Management and four from the Faculty of Law—will soon commence.

In an interview with us, Professor Arthur Sahakyan, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics, highlighted the active involvement of the heads of the respective educational programs. He noted that a dedicated team of 5 to 6 members worked on each program.
"Our foreign colleagues will present their impressions and conclusions to the relevant commission of the ASIIN Agency at a later stage. As a result, we expect that our educational programs will receive international accreditation, further enhancing the better international reputation of our university and our country," highlighted Arthur Sahakyan.
We also spoke with Prof. Dr. Bettina Harriehausen-Mühlbauer from Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (Germany) about her working visit to Yerevan State University.
- What were your impressions of the visit? How would you evaluate the results of the work done during these days?
- We observed that everyone—from students and academic staff to program heads and the rector—was open to constructive criticism and discussion. At no point did we sense any dissatisfaction. It was clear that the exchange of ideas and programs of mutual interest is truly valued here, which was very encouraging. I would describe the atmosphere as very warm and welcoming.

- What advantages and disadvantages emerged from the discussions that could either hinder or support the accreditation process of the educational programs? Do you think the programs will receive international accreditation from the German agency?
- The educational programs we have reviewed at the university are truly competitive with the programs we have seen in Europe. YSU’s educational programs meet the standards of universities in other countries. Every educational program has its advantages and disadvantages; the key is to move forward in the right direction. Our feedback will still be addressed in subsequent phases, but I would highlight one of the key strengths of the university: both the faculty and students are actively engaged in the educational process and are highly motivated. After meeting with the students, we understood that they are satisfied with their education. They are very polite, thoughtful, and have no complaints about their professors. The people here are really wonderful.
Maria Mothes, a representative of the ASIIN Agency, discussed the expert group's mission, emphasizing that during their three-day visit, they held highly productive and constructive discussions with the university’s administrative and academic staff, as well as students, all within a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

"The entire team is impressed by the willingness and professionalism of YSU representatives. I can confidently say that the necessary processes are being implemented effectively at the university, with innovative methods being introduced that will contribute to the university’s internationalization and expansion of its network of partners. These efforts will also ensure the delivery of high-quality education and educational programs that meet international standards. It is evident that the university is continually working to enhance both its reputation and the quality of education it offers," she emphasized.
The expert group from the German ASIIN Agency concluded its work at Yerevan State University with positive impressions, expressing hope that such collaborations with the university will continue.
YSU's international accreditation process is a significant step toward increasing the university’s international recognition and enhancing the quality of its educational programs. The successful completion of this process will not only boost the competitiveness of the university’s educational programs but also foster the development of the education system, laying new foundations for future international collaborations.
