“HOLDING FRANCOPHONIE 17TH SUMMIT IN ARMENIA IS AN HONOUR FOR OUR COUNTRY”: ZAVEN HARUTYUNYAN
In October Armenia hosts the 17th summit of the International Organization of Francophonie (AIMF). It will become one of the most large-scale events in the history of Armenia in which representatives of many Francophonie countries (AIMF has 84 member countries).
With the chairman of French Philology Department of the Faculty of Romance-Germanic Philology Zaven Harutyunyan we talked about the events to be organized by YSU prior to the 17 Summit of Francophonie.
Zaven Harutyunyan noted that prior to the summit a number of events have already been started in YSU since April and some are to be held before the summit.
Z. Harutyunyan attached importance to some of the events organized by YSU. According to him Yerevan State University have always outlined the importance of teaching French and cooperates with numerous French-speaking organizations and universities one of which is Francophonie university activity.
Due to the support of YSU Rectorate and Francophonie university agency the Center of Academic Achievements provided with newest equipment has solemnly opened adjunct to French Philology Department.
He informed that among other events special attention should be paid to students’ international symposium “Lingual and cultural manifestations” and the international symposium “The French language in the context of intercultural communication”.
Zaven Harutyunyan also noted that within the scope of YSU and FUA, prior to AIMF 17th summit this year the students of French Faculty established YSU Francophonie club which actively promoted interesting programs, draws up inter-university competitions and events.
Referring to the coming events he also said that before the summit it is planned to summarize the results of essay competition “French as an intercultural communication language”.
The presentation of the collection of novels by modern Francophonie authors and translations of novels. He added that the novels and stories by modern French-speaking authors were translated by the students taking their magistracy at Faculty of Romance-Germanic Philology.
It is planned to hold a round-table discussion “Ethnic culture and multi-cultural society” in YSU Center of Academic Achievements. Before October the meeting of the Center and representatives of the French organization SPFA will be held at which cooperation programs will be discussed.
Attaching importance to the fact of holding Francophonie 17th Summit in Armenia, Z. Harutyunyan said that it is an honour for our country. According to him, holding Francophonie Summit in Armenia will make Armenia more recognizable particularly in those countries which know little about Armenia.
It should be noted that to hold Francophonie Summit in Armenia our country had to win in a serious competition. Among the candidates was Tunisia. At the Summit held in Madagascar in 2016 an unprecedented decision was made to determine the next two host countries: in Armenia in 2018 and in Tunisia in 2020.
