Looking back to the 1950-60s many people remember only hippies as the bearers of youth rebellion.
But hippies were before the beatniks. The beat-generation opened the road for hippies and rock-n-roll. In last 50s the beatniks were young people dressed in black turtleneck sweaters, black berets and sunglasses, roaming about old cafes of outskirts and playing bongos.
The brightest representatives of this period are Jack Kerouac, Ken Kesey, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and many other writers, musicians, artists who actually left a bright artistic legacy.
