“UNIVERSITY IS NOT A PUPPET”: DISCUSSION OF ACADEMIC COUNCIL HELD OF YSU RECTOR’S SPEECH
The special meeting of the Academic Council of YSU was held today.
During the meeting Rector Aram Simonyan came up with an announcement and the members of the Council expressed their points of views afterwards.
Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management Hayk Sargsyan expressed his anxiety with such an attitude to YSU.
The head of the Chair of Civil Proceeding Vahe Hovhannisyan stressed that it is necessary to separate the attitude towards the Rector and to YSU and asked if it is possible that the events dedicated to the university won’t be held on the level of the governmental commission just because the Rector is Aram Simonyan.
The Rector stated that they made it clear for him that the commission hasn’t been formed because he is the Rector.
Dean of the Faculty of History Edik Minasyan stressed that if there are any problems they must be settled legally as students cannot be used to settle any problem.
Dean of the Faculty of Law, the RA NAS Gagik Ghazinyan stated that the university must come up with the initiative in which the responsibilities of the Government, of the authorized body and of the university staff will be specified. He added that the issue of Rector’s resignation or staying in office must not be used to discredit university.
Dean of the Faculty of Informatics and Applied mathematics Vahram Dumanyan offered to turn to the Council and to end the uncertainty.
Referring to the meetings with some groups of students the Rector noted that it should be taken into account that they don’t come up with any constructive criticism, besides, the Yerevan office of Soros disbursed money for administrative control in the university. He also added that they must meet with all students and hear out all of them.
Dean of the Faculty of Geography and Geology Marat Grigoryan noted that he is mostly worried with the honour of the university, as the university is not only a centre of science and education but a centre for development of public and political thought. The show created round the university discredits its fame.
Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Psychology Alexan Baghdasaryan reminded that the university has always been drawn into political intrigues. He expressed concern about YSU-if it will keep its peculiarity as a national educational centre or will become one of ordinary universities.
The head of the Chair of Semiconductor Physics and Microelectronics, the RA HAS Academician Vladimir Harutyunyan expressed concern about the scientific contribution of the Minister of Education and Science.
Vahram Dumanyan urged to play openly, to meet with the representatives of Media instead of inner discussions and to express their own positions in public.
Gagik Ghazinyan offered to make an announcement on behalf of the Academic Council.
67 persons voted for and 3 abstained in creation of a commission which will draw up the Council’s announcement and submit to the Council confirmation on Thursday.
