The Faculty of Sociology at Yerevan State University (YSU) announces with deep sorrow the passing of the distinguished Armenian-American sociologist, Professor Edward Ashod Tiryakian.
Professor Tiryakian, who made significant contributions to global sociology, was born on August 6, 1929, in Bronxville, New York, to an Armenian family. His academic path was both notable and influential. Edward Tiryakian graduated with honors from Princeton University in 1952 and received his Ph.D. in Sociology from Harvard University in 1956. Throughout his academic career, Edward Tiryakian held various prestigious positions at Princeton, Harvard, and particularly at Duke University, where he served as department chair and director of international research, playing a pivotal role in the university's international collaborations.
Professor Tiryakian's scholarly work encompassed the broadest spectrum of sociological issues. His contributions were substantial and significant in developing existential phenomenological sociology, as well as in the study of religion, culture, nationalism, ethnic conflicts, disasters, and social changes.
Beyond his academic achievements, Professor Tiryakian was a dear friend of YSU Faculty of Sociology. As a reflection of his dedication to education and Armenian heritage, he donated his personal library to our faculty, significantly enriching our resources and inspiring future generations of sociologists.
We deeply share this loss with his family and colleagues while proudly remembering Professor Tiryakian's invaluable contribution to the development of sociology. His scholarly legacy and human generosity will forever remain a source of inspiration for generations to come.
