On November 12 and 13, 2024, a two-day event titled "English Law Days in Yerevan" was held, co-organized by the British Embassy in Armenia, HAP Law Firm, and the renowned English legal consulting firm Fieldfisher.
The event was attended by numerous representatives from the Armenian legal system, universities, and guests from leading institutions in several foreign countries.
Armen Haykyants, Doctor of Legal Sciences, Professor, Head of the Chair of Civil Law at Yerevan State University, delivered a comprehensive lecture on the topic "The Role of English Law in Private International Law from the Perspective of Armenian Law". Prof. Haykyants provided a clear explanation of why English law is often preferentially applied in the field of modern international private law, highlighting the strengths of the English legal system, its traditions and institutions.
In this context, the professor’s reference to Oliver Holmes's "The Common Law (1881)" was particularly symbolic: "The life of the law has not been logic; it has been experience."
Throughout the event, discussions focused on a variety of topics, with a particular emphasis on the role of English legal culture in business services, fostering a favorable investment environment, and resolving international commercial disputes. The adoption and integration of English legal practices were also explored in relation to the development of Armenia’s legal system.
