After a long break, the inter-university moot court competition on criminal law and criminal procedure was launched in 2024, within the framework of cooperation between YSU Faculty of Law and the German Foundation for International Legal Cooperation (IRZ).
As part of the moot court competition, teams of bachelor's and master's students from universities across the Republic of Armenia compete to showcase their knowledge of criminal law and criminal procedure. The competition format involves presenting and debating a case or issue related to these areas of law, with each team arguing both the prosecution's and the defense's perspectives.
The moot court competition consists of two stages. In the written stage, teams submit their written positions on the case or issue. Those who advance to the oral stage then demonstrate their ability to present oral arguments. The two teams with the highest scores in the oral stage compete for the title of winner.
Nine teams from YSU, French University in Armenia, the Ministry of Internal Affairs Educational Complex, Northern University, Shirak State University, and Gavar State University submitted applications for participation in the 2024 moot court competition. Based on their performance, the five teams with the highest scores, as evaluated by an independent jury, will advance to the oral stage, which will be held in Aghveran on November 22 and 23 this year.
The jury includes Winfried Schubert, former president of the Higher Regional Court of Naumburg and former president of the State Constitutional Court of Saxony-Anhalt (Germany); Mkhitar Papoyan, President of the Criminal Court of Appeals of the Republic of Armenia; Robert Papoyan, judge at the Criminal Court of Appeals of the Republic of Armenia; Vardan Poghosyan, prosecutor of Ararat Province; and Armine Fanyan, member of the Chamber of Advocates of the Republic of Armenia.
