Erasmus+ program as a link between Italy and Armenia
YSU is not only an important educational center in Armenia, but also a broad platform for international cooperation. The Erasmus+ program, which fosters academic mobility for students, continues to create opportunities for intercultural exchange at YSU. This year, the university is hosting many students from around the world, including Cristiano Carboni and Giovanni Bellofiore from Italy. They came to Armenia not only to further their education, but also to discover the culture and traditions of the country.
Cristiano and Giovanni are students at YSU Faculty of Oriental Studies, where they are studying the languages, culture, and history of the Middle East and Caucasus regions. In an interview with us, they shared their experiences from the months they have spent in Armenia, talked about the educational environment at Yerevan State University, and their personal experiences and impressions.
Q: Why did you decide to participate in the Erasmus+ program and choose Armenia?
Cristiano: I have always been interested in the Caucasus as a unique crossroads of cultures and geopolitics. YSU Faculty of Oriental Studies offers in-depth knowledge about this region. I knew that while studying here I would be able to gain a better understanding of Armenia's role in the region, as well as enrich my knowledge related to the study of the Middle East and the Caucasus.
Giovanni: I am studying oriental studies at the university, and Armenia seemed like the ideal place for me to explore the culture, language, and politics of the Caucasus region. YSU Faculty of Oriental Studies is highly regarded in this field, and I was confident that I would gain the experience here that would benefit my future academic career.
Q: What was your first impression of YSU and Yerevan?
Cristiano: Yerevan is a beautiful city with a unique atmosphere. The Cascade and Republic Square, especially when illuminated at night, are truly magnificent. YSU, with its rich history and diversity, left a strong impression on me.
Giovanni: I was pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome of the people. Everyone at the university is very friendly and willing to help. You feel like you are in a new environment there.
Q: What differences have you noticed between YSU and your universities?
Cristiano: I don’t think there are any major differences, but one aspect that stands out is that in Armenia, the courses are more centrally organized, while in Europe, students are often offered a wider range of options, including English courses. However, in general, everything here is organized at a high standard.
Giovanni: What stands out to me is the flexibility in attending classes. Students have the opportunity to take exams even if they haven’t attended every class, as long as they don't exceed the allowed number of absences. In Italy, however, class participation is mandatory, which can sometimes make student life more complicated.
Q: What is your daily life like outside of classes, and what do you appreciate most about Armenia?
Cristiano: My daily routine is quite busy. I frequently participate in events organized by the Erasmus Student Network (ESN), and I try to explore Yerevan and the surrounding areas. Armenian cuisine is absolutely amazing. My favorite dish is lahmajo, and I’ve had the best lahmajo of my life here (smiles, - the interviewer notes).
Giovanni: I spend my time visiting the best spots in Yerevan: the Opera Theatre, the Cascade, and Republic Square. I truly appreciate the hospitality of the Armenian people and their willingness to help.
Q: What advice would you give to students who want to participate in the Erasmus+ program in Armenia?
Cristiano: I would advise students to review the list of courses offered at YSU in advance so they have a clear understanding of what to expect. However, the most important thing is to be open to gaining new experiences and engaging with a new culture.
Giovanni: Armenia is undoubtedly a unique country with a rich culture and history. If you truly want to explore this part of the world, Armenia is the right choice. YSU will support you in both your academic and personal development.
Through their experiences in Armenia and at YSU, Cristiano and Giovanni highlight that the Erasmus+ program is an opportunity not only for academic learning but also for self-discovery and the exploration of new cultures. Their stories show how a period of studying abroad can change one’s perception of the world and one's own potential.
Student exchanges within the framework of the Erasmus+ program confirm that education knows no borders and is one of the best means of intercultural communication.
Thus, Armenia and YSU have already become an integral part of Cristiano and Giovanni’s life experiences, revealing a region full of new opportunities and cultural values.
