Demographic challenges in Armenia: Risks and opportunities Demography is not only a science about population size but also the cornerstone through which a country's economic, social, and cultural future is determined. Today, Armenia faces serious demographic challenges that require thorough research and solutions. In an interview with us, Aram Vartikyan, Assistant Professor at the Chair of Applied Sociology, YSU Faculty of Sociology, shared his insights on these issues, the involvement of young professionals in the field, and the role of the university.
Academia-industry collaboration: Research concluded with collective monograph At YSU Faculty of Economics and Management, scientific research was conducted from 2021 to 2024 on the topic "Issues and Solutions for the Development of Academia-Industry Collaboration in Armenia". Upon completion of the research, a collective monograph was published, providing an in-depth analysis of the process of academia-industry collaboration, existing challenges, and potential solutions, based on the research findings.
YSU STEM High School provides opportunities for comprehensive development: Social science stream students share their experience In the 2023-2024 academic year, YSU STEM High School expanded its scope by offering education in the social sciences. 10th-grade students from the social science stream, Ani-Nikolin Manukyan and Hayk Poghosyan, share their insights on the accumulated knowledge, opportunities, and student-teacher relationships at the school.
From science to production: New equipment to enhance scientific results The Quantum Phenomena Research and Modeling Laboratory at YSU Institute of Physics has received new equipment that will expand research opportunities and facilitate the production of results that meet international standards. The new device will enable new experiments, allow for the development of materials with novel properties, and advance studies toward practical applications.
Mastering western research methods and prospects for collaboration: YSU PhD student on University of Jena As part of interuniversity cooperation, Alen Sargsyan, a PhD student at YSU Faculty of International Relations, conducted research for one month at Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany). He emphasizes that both YSU and the University of Jena actively promote interdisciplinary collaboration, enabling researchers to integrate methodologies from various fields and achieve innovative outcomes.
YSU PhD student develops novel strategy to prevent cancer progression Exosomes—microscopic, membrane-bound particles released by cells—can have a significant impact on cancer development. Exosomes secreted by cancer cells influence neighboring cells, facilitating disease advancement. Lily Kalashyan, a PhD student at the Chair of Genetics and Cytology, YSU Faculty of Biology, is studying the role of exosomes in cancer development, analyzing potential ways to inhibit them in order to slow disease progression.
YSU master’s student participates in one of the world’s largest conferences When a young scientist gets the opportunity to participate in one of the world’s largest conferences, it is not only a personal achievement but also a significant accomplishment for the scientific community of the university. Gor Chalayan, a second-year master's student at YSU Institute of Physics and an engineer at the Research Laboratory of Optoelectronics and Photonics, is the first master’s student from Armenia to participate in such a conference.
Psychologist’s comment: How to overcome challenges in student life? Educational and social challenges that emerge in students' lives can significantly affect their psychological well-being and academic performance. To gain deeper insights into the problems students face and the steps they can take to overcome these obstacles, we spoke with Narine Khachatryan, Head of the Chair of Personality Psychology at the Faculty of Philosophy and Psychology, Yerevan State University.
Students push professional boundaries to expand their intellectual horizons The educational system is constantly evolving to align with modern demands. Today, students are no longer confined to acquiring knowledge solely within their chosen fields; instead, they strive to broaden their intellectual horizons as much as possible. For the first time in Armenia, the newly introduced Mobility Window program provides students with the opportunity to move beyond the conventional boundaries of education by selecting courses from related academic programs that align with their interests.
YSU researchers explore the potential of yeast-based targeted substance production Senior Laboratory Assistant Liana Anikyan from the Faculty of Biology and Director of the Research Institute of Biology Karen Trchounian are studying the environmental conditions that enable the optimal growth and reproduction of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast. This research aims to identify the optimal conditions for yeast cultivation, which could contribute to increasing the production of targeted substances, such as bioethanol—an alternative to fossil fuels. YSU acquired strains of S. cerevisiae several years ago, and their study is currently being conducted at the Research Institute of Biology.
