«NOVEL APPROACHES TO INCREASE THE YIELD OF MICROALGAE BIOMASS AND BIOSYNTHESIS OF NANOPARTICLES WITH ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTIES»
Dr. Lilit Gabrielyan, Associate Professor at the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Biotechnology in a conversation with us said, that “Green synthesis” of nanoparticles (NPs) is promising due to its cost-effective and environmentally friendly features in comparison with chemical synthesis.
The scientific topic was funded by MօESCS RA.
Microalgae are currently applied in biotechnology as a sustainable resource for valuable metabolites and their biomass can be used as a platform for the biosynthesis of NPs.
The present project aims to increase yield of biomass in some microalgae, to obtain silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using microalgae biomass, and to determine their antimicrobial activity.
The effect of various physicochemical factors (carbon sources, illumination modes, etc.) on the yield of microalgae biomass will be studied.
The results obtained will prepare ground for the development of new approaches in the cultivation of biotechnologically valuable microalgae with a high yield of biomass.
During this project the microalgae-mediated AgNPs synthesis and physicochemical analysis of obtained NPs will be performed, and the effect of these NPs on the Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria will be investigated.
The results obtained will be important for the development of microalgae biotechnology, and the algae-mediated NPs synthesis may become a new branch of nanotechnology in Armenia.
