Chair of French Philology
The Chair of French Philology has gone through a short but fruitful path of development, becoming one of the most important Chairs of YSU from a subdivision of the Faculty of Philology. It was created in the 2009-2010 academic year, separating from the Chair of Romanian Philology. Being a newly established Chair, but having great achievements in the past, the Chair of French Philology continues its traditional activities, training qualified specialists who today work in the RA government, ministries, state and private enterprises, and educational centers of the republic.
Ph.D., Associate Professor Zaven Harutyunyan, was the first head of the Chair of French Philology and now Ph.D., Associate Professor Gayane Sargsyan, heads it.
The Chair of French Philology has great scientific potential, which is evidenced by the monographs, textbooks, methodological manuals, and dictionaries authored by our professors.
Blbulyan’s translation of the novel of Nobel laureate G.J.M. "The Record", Vardanyan's "Manuel de français" educational manual, Harutyunyan's "Language Verbalization and Inflectional Meanings", Khachatryan's "Human Rights in International Documents", Gharibyan and Julhakyan's "French Reading Manual" and "French History and Geography Manual", Armenian versions of French textbooks (grades 5 to 9 of public schools) completed and edited by Blbulyan and Avetisyan, Blbulyan's "Pronunciation-Orthographic Guide of the French Language", Sargsyan's "Translation and Translation" manual, "French Textbook", Tamrazyan's " Les visages de l'art dans la littérature française (XVII- XXI siècles)", Vardanyan's "Manuel de français (Le vocabulaire à travers l'art)" are memorable. In 2009, the unprecedented big "French-Armenian" dictionary was published under the general editorship of Muradyan. One of the most important areas of activity of the Chair of French Philology is translation and translation studies. Many classic and modern works of French fiction and linguistic literature have been translated into Armenian by the efforts of the Chair's professors.
The Chair deals with methodological and organizational issues of teaching French at Yerevan State University, including revision and re-editing of subject curricula, raising the professional quality of young professors. Educational methodical works were also carried out in the YSU Ijevan branch.
The Chair of French Philology works closely with the universities of Montpellier 3, Paul Valery, Lille, and Aix-Marseille in France.
In 2022, an agreement was reached between the Chair of French Philology and the University of Lille in France on the new Master's degree program on "International and Business Communication". The program will be implemented jointly with the University of Lille, providing a double degree.
The Chair of French Philology also organizes international conferences. The international conference entitled "Speech in a Scientific Context" (2022) is worth mentioning, which was jointly organized by the Chair of French Philology and the University of Lille in France and was attended by lecturers, researchers, and post-graduate students not only from the Republic of Armenia but also from the universities of the Republic of France and the Russian Federation. On the initiative of the Chair, YSU joined the Francophonie International University organization, which provides an opportunity to carry out a wide range of European educational and research activities.
The Chair implements the "English language, French language, and communication" Undergraduate educational program.
